08 May Whispers from the Land
Today my show Whispers from the Land opened at Red e Cafe Gallery.
The original plan for the show was to have a big opening night party this evening. Music, food, art and lots of fun. But unfortunately plans had to be adjusted with the pandemic closing all gatherings. We shifted and still hung the show for those that go to the Cafe in the coming weeks to enjoy a to go beverage from Mindy.
For everyone else, I put together the video below to give you a chance to attend a virtual opening. One to enjoy from the comfort of your couch in your pajamas if you would like, or get dressed up and pretend you are walking around looking at the art, sipping wine, and meeting new people.
The concept for this series, Whispers from the Land, materialized late last year after I returned home from a five week road trip traveling from Portland OR to Portland ME and back again. As the miles rolled by out the window, I watched the light dance across the landscape and change the story being whispered from the land. This change brought dramatic colors and texture as the light shifted from low on the horizon to high above the landscape. It was this shift that inspired the series.
The pieces in this series are painted with layers of mineral paint using a palette knife to build a textured surface. To create depth in the texture, pan pastels are used over the paint to give shadow and highlight to the composition. The final result is a piece that draws you in and invites you to feel the energy from the land that had stories to share.
